SID device being considered
The Alderton Parish Council are investigating the possibility of having a solar powered Speed Indicator Device (SID) installed at a fixed location on the B4077 - money that will be made available to the PC by housing developers would fund the project. The Device can be set to display either the vehicles speed , or a "slow down" message, The Device can also be set to record traffic volumes and speeds to download via an "app" to a smart phone or tablet.

B4077 road survey results re-kindle push for traffic calming
Traffic on the B4077 was monitored over a 2 week period from 24th August - 7th September 2015. Initial reaction to the results was that there had been a slight improvement compared to the survey dome in 2013 despite the data being presented in a different way to 2 years ago. Nevertheless whilst there appears to be a reduction in average speeds, around 60% of traffic surveyed were exceeding the 60mph speed limit - one vehicle clocked OVER 110mph.

Planning Application set to add to traffic flow
The application number is 14/0030/TWMAJW via the County Council website. There are a lot of objections, mostly from Sedgeberrow residents, as Gilders prefer to use the B4078 through Sedgeberrow rather than go to Teddington Hands and along the A46.
The application was received back in April and is listed as "pending consideration".

18 MONTHS WASTED - A NEW DAWN
The working group recently had a meeting with Councillor Roger Wilson, who has come on board to give weight to our campaign to get something done. We are having to treat this as "starting again" after wasting 18 months discussing and dismissing plans to install village gates - which in the event would not have been allowable for a 60mph road
RESULTS OF TRAFFIC SURVEY
For a 7 day period in September a series of recordings were made by GCC/Police to monitor traffic flows and speed of vehicles.
Two sets of recorders were utilised - one by the Corner Cottage B&B and another east of Gretton Fields junction. The recorders outside the B&B showed a weekly traffic rate of over 18,000 in both directions.
But the alarming stats are that over 5,600 vehicles were clocked at over 63mph, of these 3,386 exceeded 66mph, with over 2,000 exceeding 69mph. These figures make it clear to me that we have a case to once again go back to the relevant agencies and ask for something to be done.

More tales of minor shunts and near misses
Members of the Safety Group have witnessed or been told of various acts of stupidity they have seen on the stretch of road from Frampton Cottages down to the Hobnails. Most refer to the area just west of the garage, where cars have been seen overtaking in the "dip". We have asked Highways for some signs. We also feel that the white lines from Hobnails to the Garage are inappropriate given the number of bends and undulations.

The group received news of progress on the road. It stems from requests by Toddington Village Council - and if it goes ahead will help us, but has not come from direct action by our working group
Road Safety Scheme – Blackshed Junction, Toddington.
Gloucestershire Highways is looking to make improvements to the junction of B4077 with Evesham Road. The proposals are to try to reduce collisions at the junction and increase driver awareness of the junction.
On the B4077 it is planned to provide a ‘SLOW DOWN’ Vehicle Activated Sign and permanent staggered junction ahead signs on yellow backing boards within the highway verge outside Oak House and another to the east of the junction. It is also proposed to provide flexi marker posts within the verges at the junction and to refresh the existing carriageway markings.

GATES - A NO GO!!
It has been revealed that the Gateways have been put on stop. Apparently you cannot have Gateways on a 60mph classified road. Considering that it was seen as a solution to bring more awareness to the road (suggested by one of the agencies involved with the group) it asks the question whether they should have known that in the first place!!
The Working Party has met and are going to submit some new suggestions to the Group at a meeting to be held on 22nd July 2013.
One of the suggestions will be to put some kind of Vehicle Activated Sign in place (2 if possible) to ask people to SLOW DOWN or flash "60 mph

ONE YEAR ON
Sunday 26th May 2013 marks the anniversary of the regrettable death of Julie Stoddart-Cooke killed when her car crashed into Petrol Pumps at the Alderton Garage.
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO MAKE THIS ROAD SAFE ???
1. Road resurfaced
2. THINK signs
3. Speed Camera Signs
We are also waiting the installation of Village "Gates"
The way forward
Once the Gates are installed we think it would be pertinent to request we have another speed test done to see if the mean speed has been reduced. If so then we have a better chance of a speed reduction.
Noticing that there are now Vehicle activated "Slow Down" signs on the Teddington to Tewkesbury road (Ashchurch), we also feel that these would be another weapon in the armoury.

ANOTHER "Collision"
19th February 2013 - a collision between a car and a van outside the Alderton Garage - scene of the fatal accident last summer. It is believed a car travelling eastwards was indicating to turn into the village and was being followed by a van. At the last minute just as the van was pulling out to overtake, the car changed indicators and proceeded to turn into the petrol station forecourt.
The van hit the car and careered off the road, with the car ending up in the petrol station. Nobody was injured. The police were called but did not attend. (see pictures below)

NEW SIGNS TO GO UP "WITHIN DAYS"
Gary Handley OBE Road Safety Glos C C said that "They will be produced to fit large metal frames that should be clearly seen on the verges along the route and will be placed out by Gloucestershire Highways.
All of the design work has been done and we are now just waiting for the boards to be printed and I am advised that this should be completed in a few days, and they have suggested that they may be turned around as quickly as Monday or Tuesday of next week, all being well. "
This is a good positive step in the right direction, and we should thank Gary and everyone concerned.

LATEST MEETING -
There was a meeting on Thursday 18th October between the ARSG and the relevant agencies.
The minutes of this meeting will be uploaded to the site when they have been typed up!.
It has been agreed to install two sets of gateways - and we are going for an advisory speed limit (not yet set). We are hoping that this will have the desired affect to drive mean speeds down below 50mph so that we can set "wheels in motion" to apply for a 50mph speed limit.

The Group
Following a series of accidents this year on the B4077 a group was set up. Meetings were prompted by a recent fatality at the garage on the B4077 near Alderton. A working group was set up - members are Keith Page, Jim Hinder, Rob Phillips, Paul Smith, Jonathan Everett, Victoria Copas, Roger Knapp
This website was set up to make people aware of what progress has been made, and what future plans are.
We hope to achieve our aims by liaising with the relevant agencies (highways, police, council etc), and will endevour to keep the public aware of events through this website and through the local media.
